Are You Dreaming of Sleep?

You are not alone!

Overall:

The National Institute of Health (NIH) estimates that 40 million people in the U.S. have a sleep disorder.

Adolescents:

On school nights 31% get a borderline amount of sleep and 45% get insufficient amounts of sleep.

Women:

A significant percentage of pregnant women (30%) and Post-partum women (42%) report rarely or never getting a good night’s sleep.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) 61% of post-menopausal women report some symptoms of insomnia.

Older Adults:

The NSF also found that 44% of older adults experience one or more symptoms of insomnia, at least a few nights a week or more.

Consequences of sleep problems and elevated levels of stress

Poor sleep and stress play a role in the development and/or maintenance of many chronic physical and mental health conditions (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, anxiety).

Improving your sleep and healthy management of stress, provides man benefits including:

Concentration and attention, cardiovascular health, healthy weight management, reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms, and overall well-being.

How can you improve your sleep and reduce your stress?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) endorses a combination of Sleep Hygiene and Stimulus Control (SC) for improving sleep.  In fact AASM recommends SC as the highest standalone standard for improving sleep.

Recent articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that Mindfulness training can improve symptoms of insomnia, depression, anxiety and reduce fatigue pain.

“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally,” (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 1997).
